Who is eligible for membership in this Chapter?
All persons listed by the University officials as graduates or former students of Johnson C. Smith University, and associated
(interested friends of the University) and who reside in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area are eligible for membership.
What constitutes the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area?
The DC Metropolitan Area is made up of:
- The District of Columbia;
- Prince George's County and Montgomery County in Maryland;
- Fairfax County and Arlington and Alexandria in Northern Virginia.
What are the demographics of the current membership?
The membership is made up of a broad cross-section of JCSU alumni and friends of the University living in the DC Metropolitan
Area. Members are committed to promote and support the programs of the University through cooperation, fund raising,
mentoring and community-based initiatives. Most are Smith graduates and enjoy professional employment in the area, ranging
from teachers, engineers, preachers, doctors, computer specialists, business entrepreneurs, etc. Graduates span the
classes of 1940's to 2000's. New alumni are encouraged to join our Chapter and are always welcome! This Chapter
has existed since 1930.
Do you meet regularly and if so, when and where?
Regular chapter meetings are held on the 2nd Saturday of every other month (or other designated date) from September to
June inclusive. Most meetings are held at the Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church, 5109 Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave
NE, Washington, DC from 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
How much are the Annual Dues?
Annual dues are $60.00 ($35.00 local and $25.00 national) payable to the JCSU Alumni Chapter and are due for the current
fiscal year, which begins September 1 and ends August 31. The $25.00 national dues collected are forwarded on your behalf
to the National Alumni Association (NAA) of Johnson C. Smith University.
Why should I join the DC Alumni Chapter?
- A unified body of alumni & friends can support the University more effectively;
- Dues help support the general operations of the University & local chapter;
- A unified body with resources may lead by example in fund-raising efforts;
- Local alumni can network for personal, professional and social advantage.
Your local alumni encourages you to join our chapter and if you're interested; volunteer
with UNCF, Young Alumni or the Washington InterAlumni Council (WIAC); participate in local college days/fairs; be a mentor
for area students; and contribute your energy, ideas and resources to "Our Alma Mater"! If nothing else, come out
to network, refresh old friendships and start new ones!
How can I join the DC Alumni Chapter?
To join our alumni chapter, please click on the "Membership Form" in the left menu window. Complete the form and
forward it electronically as directed.
NOTE: Once you have submitted your application requesting Alumni Membership, send in your annual
membership dues ($60.00) to the contact noted at the bottom of the form. Please make checks payable to "JCSU
Alumni Chapter".
Can I contribute donations to Johnson C. Smith University via local chapters?
Yes you can ... but it's preferable for you to donate directly to the University. If you elect to donate via the
local chapter, note that ALL contributions to the University MUST be in the form of personal checks or money orders made payable
to Johnson C. Smith University.
Such checks should not be made payable to local alumni chapters. This process allows you to legitimately claim these
donations as Tax Deductions and when applicable to file for matching company contributions from your employer.
